Kits for KIDS
We are starting to receive school items for this much needed project which is being headed up by Lutheran World Relief. The mission board and Care Ministry have teamed up to make this a very special project.
The Holy Spirit is working in the hearts of Redeemer folks to provide items to children. Please pray that these children will come to know Jesus as their Savior so they experience the love of those who serve Him. God uses all things to grow His kingdom.
If interested in sharing your blessings with this mission, please see the list below. The list contains the items needed to complete each kit. You may drop your donations off in the Life Center now through the end of September.
- Padded or spiral notebooks of ruled paper approximately 8” X 10-1/2”
- Blunt scissors (safety scissors with embedded steel blades work well)
- 30-centimeter ruler, or a ruler with centimeters on one side and inches on the other
- Pencil sharpener
- New, unsharpened #2 pencils with erasers

Back Pack Blessing
The first day of school is getting closer and no doubt many preparations are being made to get all of our students ready for the first day of school. On August 15-16, in all of the worship services, we will be praying for all of our students as they start a new school year. Whether you are starting preschool or going back to school for your master’s degree, we want to pray that God would guide your studies and use you in the classroom to share His love with others. Bring your backpack to church as the congregation prays for a successful year for all of our students!

Wanted - Names of Our Service Men and Women
If you have a family member, friend (does not need to live in the area), or neighbor who is currently serving our country in the U.S. military, we are still seeking these people to add to our list. Redeemer Care Ministry wants to acknowledge, pray for, encourage, and do some special projects for these people who selflessly give of themselves to protect the freedoms we as Americans enjoy. We are interested in all military whether serving abroad or based stateside. If you know of someone who is serving our country, please pick up a form at the Welcome Center, fill it out and return it. For more information, call Phyllis Call at Redeemer Care Ministry at 693-9214.

Nurses Notes: How We Burn Calories
The common belief regarding metabolism is that a slim person’s metabolism is high and the metabolism of an overweight person is low. Usually this is not the case. Weight is not necessarily linked to metabolism. Weight is dependent on the balance of total calories consumed versus total calories burned. You gain weight when you take in more calories than your body needs. You loose weight when in you take in fewer calories. The engine that burns these calories is metabolism.
The process by which the body converts food into energy is called metabolism. During the complex biochemical process, calories (from carbohydrates, fats, and proteins) are combined with oxygen to release the energy your body needs to function.
Your total energy expenditure is the number of calories that your body burns each day. The total energy expenditure is made up of the following three factors:
Basic needs – your body requires energy for the basics such as breathing, fuel for organs, circulating blood, adjusting hormone levels, and growing and repairing cells. Calories expended to cover these basic functions are your basal metabolic rate (BMR). A person’s BMR is the largest portion of energy use, representing two thirds to three quarters of the calories used each day. Energy needs for these basic functions stay fairly consistent and aren’t easily changed.
Food processing – the food that you consume also takes calories through digesting, absorbing, transporting, and storage. This accounts for about 10 percent of the calories used each day. For the most part, your body’s energy requirement to process food stays relatively steady and isn’t easily changed.
Physical activity – walking, playing tennis, running, and any other movement accounts for the remainder of the calories used. The number of calories burned depends on the frequency, duration, and the intensity of the activities.
Often we think that significant weight gain or being overweight is due to a low metabolism or even an under active thyroid gland known as hypothyroidism. However, it is not very common for excess weight to be related to a low metabolism. Most overweight people do not have a low metabolism nor do they have an underlying condition such as hypothyroidism.
Usually weight gain is more likely due to an energy imbalance – consuming more calories than your body burns. For weight loss to occur you need to create an energy deficit by eating fewer calories, or increasing the number of calories that you burn through physical activity, preferably both. |
